University to host solar boat competition

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa will be the host of the world championship of intercollegiate solar-electric boating for three years beginning in 2011.

Associate professor of industrial technology Reg Pecen says although no date has been set for the event, it most likely will be held the second week in June. He says about 20 teams of seven to 10 students usually compete in the event, with usually about 200 spectators attending.

According to Pecen, the competition allows undergraduates to be involved in applied engineering and technology research. He adds the competition allows undergraduates to be involved in applied engineering and technology research and to develop confidence in their abilities.

Solar Splash teams earn points in technical inspections and reports, engineering design, visual displays, workmanship and on-the-water sprint, endurance and slalom competitions.
