Iberdrola España commissions one of its largest solar projects

A new 316 MW photovoltaic plant has begun commissioning in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, marking one of the largest solar projects in Castilla y León. The facility is Iberdrola España’s second in the province and covers 439 ha across the Valdecarros area and the Sierra de Torralba. Once fully operational, it is expected to supply electricity to more than 155,000 households and cut annual CO₂ emissions by an estimated 75,000 t.

The project, developed in partnership with Norges Bank, involved a $233 M (€200 M) investment and generated around 800 jobs during construction. Local suppliers played a significant role, including Tecinsa for the transformer substation, Perez Coco for cranes, Solar B-Max for mechanical assembly, and several regional firms providing concrete, aggregates, sand, gravel, and other services.

Beyond energy generation, measures to protect the environment and cultural heritage are included. Habitats of Community Interest will be restored, a pond will be added to strengthen the local hydrological network, and existing ponds will be monitored and maintained. Biodiversity initiatives include insect hotels for pollinators, nest boxes for lesser kestrels, and refuges for wild rabbits.

On the cultural side, agreements with Ciudad Rodrigo City Council include refurbishment of access to the Cathedral and support for the “Astróbriga Solar System,” a scale reproduction designed to promote tourism, education, and outreach.

Castilla y León remains Iberdrola España’s largest region for renewables, with 6,297 MW installed across solar, hydroelectric, and wind power. The company also operates Spain’s first wind-solar hybrid facility, highlighting the region’s role in advancing renewable energy.
