Iran Moves to Replace Fossil Fuel with Renewable Energies

Iran's private sector will build a number of power plants in the next few years which will use renewable energies to generate 5,000MW of electricity, Managing-Director of Renewable Energies Organization of Iran (SANA) Yousef Armoudeli announced on Monday.

"SANA wants to a number of power plants to be built by the private sector to generate around 5,000MW of power through using renewable energy resources during the Fifth Five-Year Development Plan (2010-2015)," Armoudli said.

He also announced that a contract has already been signed with the private sector to build a 1,000MW power plant which will use wind, biomass and solar energies.

Earlier today, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the world's first solar-gas combined cycle power plant in the central city of Yazd.

President Ahmadinejad inaugurated the 480MW power plant during a one-day visit to Yazd.

The combined cycle power plant, located in Northwestern Yazd, is among the largest power plants in Iran and is the first of a kind in the world.

Iran has recently taken a giant stride towards generating electricity through consuming renewable energy resources.

Iran's first solar power plant was inaugurated in Shiraz in Southern part of the country late 2009.
