In recent years, off-grid regions have gained increasing attention regarding their energy needs, with solar energy emerging as a key driver of energy transformation. By the end of 2024, global off-grid renewable energy capacity has reached 14.3 GW, with solar energy contributing 6.3 GW. These systems are powering critical sectors such as public utilities, agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and education, bringing clean energy to vulnerable communities around the world.

Among off-grid areas, islands face some of the most urgent energy challenges. Many island communities grapple with heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels, unstable energy supplies, and mounting economic and environmental pressures. As a global leader in energy transition, Trinasolar has stepped up with its smart PV and energy storage solutions, delivering clean and reliable energy to island regions. The company is helping islands embrace sustainable growth and revitalize their communities through resilient infrastructure development.

Supporting island tourism with solar energy

Tourism is the backbone of many island economies, but the growing influx of visitors often leads to surging energy demands that strain traditional power grids. In this context, Trinasolar’s smart PV and energy storage solutions have become a green powerhouse for tourism islands, driving prosperity while balancing economic growth with ecological preservation.

In Bohol, the Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, Trinasolar supplied its first large-scale solar farm, Dagohoy solar power project, which was successfully connected to the grid in 2024. The project utilizes Trinasolar Vertex modules with a capacity of 27 MW to generate 41,000 MWh of electricity annually, providing electricity to 18,000 households and major tourist attractions and ensuring stable energy supply to support the island’s thriving tourism industry.

On Sabaniah Island in the UAE, unique salt domes, a renowned tourist landmark, posed significant challenges due to its corrosive conditions and uneven surface. Trinasolar supplied its high-quality solar mounting systems for this project, ensuring reliable solar power supply and supporting the island’s tourism-driven economy.

Microgrids will be key to managing the fluctuating energy demands of tourism islands in future. Trinasolar aims to green up more destinations and enable their sustainable growth through its industry-leading solutions.

Building reliable power system through smart PV and energy storage

Island regions face much higher electricity costs due to their reliance on imported fossil fuels, leaving them vulnerable to price fluctuations and energy security risks. Trinasolar’s smart PV and energy storage solutions greatly help ease this strain.

A prime example is the solar-storage-diesel hybrid microgrid project in the Maldives. By delivering PV, energy storage systems, and diesel generators with smart energy management platform, Trinasolar alleviates the reliance on diesel across 27 islands. This project provides stable electricity to thousands of residents, hospitals, schools, and ports, and saves 1.3 million liters of diesel annually, significantly cutting costs and emissions.

In addition, microgrid projects also significantly enhance energy resilience for island communities. These systems can quickly restore power, ensuring safety and stability in extreme weather events. They not only address current challenges but also prepare islands to face future climate crises with confidence.

Achieving harmony between development and nature

Amid constrained landscapes and resources, it is human being’s vital agenda to achieve harmony between development and nature. Innovative solutions like agrivoltaics, aquavoltaics, and floating solar systems enable islands to maximize natural assets while overcoming land constraints.

Trinasolar’s smart solar and energy storage solutions will continue to optimize resource use, enhance efficiency, and strengthen resilience for island power systems. Guided by its “SOLAR” sustainability management concept, Trinasolar is dedicated to bringing clean energy to all communities, ensuring a sustainable future for every corner of the world.
