India to hold nuclear talks with IAEA next month

India is expected to hold talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for safeguards concerning its nuclear accord with the United States, the Times of India newspaper reported Sunday.

The Indian government would like to hold negotiations with IAEA after the middle of October, said the newspaper.

India-specific safeguards are crucial for the operationalization of the nuclear deal and New Delhi is required to hold negotiations with the IAEA by the middle of next month if it is to get the agreement cleared by early next year.

"None of the milestones will be compromised," said a source involved in India's strategy planning.

The Indian government is faced with the worst crisis due to opposition from the Left, whose support is crucial for its survival, to the nuclear accord with the United States.

Left leaders have warned the government against going ahead with deal-related negotiations with the IAEA.
