Eku Energy acquires Bluestone BESS pipeline

Battery energy storage system (BESS) firm Eku Energy has acquired Bluestone Energy’s BESS portfolio.
Eku Energy has taken on seven planned BESS projects from renewable energy firm Bluestone Energy with a combined pipeline capacity of 1GW/2GWh. These include a 98MW/196MWh project in Leatherhead, Surrey, the 98MW/196MWh Sturts Farm project in Dorset, and two 240MW projects located in Ninfield, East Sussex, and Rochester in Kent.
The transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of this year. Bluestone Energy and Eku Energy have collaborated together under a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) since 2022, allowing the companies to jointly identify and progress plans for BESS developments. Eku Energy delivers the projects through construction and operations.
Eku Energy currently has three BESS projects in the UK; the 40MW/40MWh Maldon BESS, which is operational, and the 28MW/56MWh Basildon BESS and 40MW/55MWh Loudwater BESS projects currently under construction.
Eku Energy CEO Daniel Burrows said that the acquisition of Bluestone Energy’s BESS portfolio was consistent with the company’s long-term approach and claimed it signifies a commitment to clean energy in the UK. Burrows added: “Acquiring the Bluestone portfolio provides Eku Energy with additional flexibility to offer firm commitments to our customers faster and this is consistent with our mission to accelerate the energy transition”.
Eku partners with Habitat Energy to optimise Basildon BESS
Earlier this month, Eku Energy selected global BESS optimizer Habitat Energy to serve as the optimiser for its Basildon BESS project in Essex. The project is set to reach commercial operations in mid-2025, after which time it will be managed by Habitat Energy’s fully integrated, end-to-end optimisation solution.
This is not the first time Habitat Energy and Eku Energy have collaborated. Habitat Energy has also been appointed to optimise Eku Energy’s 250MW/500MWh Williamsdale BESS in the ACT, Australia, which is due to come online in 2026.
Habitat Energy has made several significant international optimisation deals in recent weeks, as covered by our sister site, Energy Storage News. Habitat Energy was recently selected to optimise Epic Energy’s Mannum BESS, a 100MW/200MWh development in Australia set to begin operations later this year, and was also recently appointed to optimise Eni Plentitude’s 200MW/200MWh Guajillo BESS in Texas, USA.
