Work to begin on underground power

Work is about to start in Karratha to move powerlines underground.

The initiative is being rolled out over the next two years in cyclone-prone Karratha, Roebourne, South Hedland and Onslow.

It is expected to cost households between $3,500 to $5,000 to install.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls is in Karratha to mark the start of construction and has committed $100 million of Royalties for Regions funding towards the project.

"It was very concerning for me, I visited a couple of times right after cyclones and the power was out for extended periods of time, the Government is now committed to providing a better, more reliable and a safer power system for the north-west," he said.

Shire president Nicole Lockwood says underground power is a key step for Karratha as it transforms into a Pilbara city.

"When you think about what makes a city, people might not necessarily think of powerlines but when you look at the pictures between what a street with overhead power looks like and a street with underground power, the ability to grow your trees, not having to cut back because of powerlines, the aesthetics is certainly a big improvement," she said.
