US slaps duties on Chinese wind towers

The US Commerce Department says it may impose punitive duties on Chinese wind towers following a preliminary investigation into their import. It says it thinks Chinese producers and exporters of utility-scale wind towers are receiving subsidies ranging from just under 14 percent to 26 percent on making the products.

As a result of the finding, the Commerce Department will instruct US Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash deposit based on these preliminary rates. The department is expected to make a final decision over the issue in September.

Last Friday China signaled it would challenge anti-subsidy duties imposed by the United States on 22 products at the World Trade Organization.
