UK Energy Institute recognises biomass pioneer

David Williams, CEO of Eco2, has been recognised for his contribution to the energy sector at the Energy Institute Awards 2011.
By Kari Williamson

Williams and his team have been responsible for a series of industry 'firsts', including the UK's first and world's largest straw fire biomass power station at Ely Cambridge. He has also been active in the onshore wind, energy from waste and tidal stream sectors.

As well as launching three successful businesses, Williams has at different times been a member of the Government's Renewable Energy Advisory Board, DEFRA's Biomass Implementation Advisory Group and DECC's Biomass Sustainability Group, as well as a project grant assessor for the DTI.

Sarah Beacock, Professional Affairs Director, Energy Institute, says: "The EI's award for Individual Achievement recognises an outstanding contribution and commitment to the energy sector. From the candidates shortlisted, the judging panel chose to present David [Williams] with this award for his delivery and technical innovation in the renewables industry. In particular he has been a great pioneer for new technologies and a champion for launching biomass-fired projects on a commercial scale."
