Senior Chinese leader calls for efforts to develop new energy

Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun has called for more efforts and investment to develop new energy industries during his four-day inspection tour ending Sunday in northwestern Gansu Province.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited some wind power plants and new energy companies in the province and appreciated the efforts to boost the new energy sector and other related industries.

He asked the local government and businesses to make full use of the domestic market to promote independent innovation in the sector and strive to take a leading role in the international market of new energy.

Li also visited some technologically competitive companies and institutes in the province.

During his visit to a rural village, Li talked with the residents and watched a performance organized and staged by local farmers. He called on cultural departments to exert efforts in promoting the cultural activities for the public at grassroots level.

Moreover, Li called for more efforts to understand and implement well the speech that Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, delivered on July 1 to mark the CPC's 90th anniversary.

Learning and implementing the speech should be integrated with the education of patriotism, socialism and ethnic unity, as well as the work to promote the scientific outlook on development and transform the development pattern of the economy, Li said.

He also called on the local governments to intensify environmental protection and promote the quality and efficiency of economic development.
