Honeywell implements complete building management system for National Aerospace Laboratory

The National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) in Amsterdam carries out research and innovation in aerospace technologies. The NLR presented Honeywell with a challenging project: the complete replacement of its fire detection and security systems. The existing security systems were outdated and no longer complied with the current requirements of NLR, the insurance company and the fire brigade. In addition, NLR wanted an integrated security management system, so that the control room could operate and manage the secondary security systems simply, increasing security levels at the same time.

As main contractor Honeywell Building Solutions in Apeldoorn completed the project successfully, enabling NLR's new control room to remotely manage other branches in the future.

NLR was looking for a company that could manage the entire project and provide a turnkey solution: fire detection and evacuation system and corresponding certification, security systems including premises protection, burglary detection, video surveillance and access control. In addition, the requirements included assembly, cabling and project management. To meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Defence, NLR also needed an ABDO certificate. NLR opted for Honeywell Building Solutions because of its customer-oriented approach, integrated control room solution, excellent references and leading expertise in aerospace.

The project was quite a challenge, due to the difficult assembly conditions. The industrial buildings had many high and hard-to-reach points, and large buildings with many exposed areas required a particular approach. In addition, the infrastructure inside the buildings was very outdated.

The central control room at the Amsterdam head office was equipped with the Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator™ with integrated Digital Video Manager as an IP video surveillance system. The installations at Marknesse, with sub control room, and the hangar at Schiphol-Rijk, are managed remotely from this CCR. For each installation an autonomous EBI server is used to guarantee availability. TemaLine was chosen as the access control system, for efficient card holder management and time and attendance systems. In addition, an ATS system was integrated to serve as a burglary detection system.

Due to the age and current use of the buildings, together with the strict requirements set by government and insurance companies, a certified fire detection and evacuation system was installed. Honeywell carried out the installation work. By integrating an XLS80e fire detection and evacuation system in the CCR, the overall fire safety of the buildings was increased to a higher level. Alarm processing and follow-up takes place from the CCR. The project was completed with a full system upgrade to the latest software version, which fully prepared the system for the latest technologies. A system which will continue to comply with NLR's future growth and direction.
