In 2020, Belgium installed photovoltaic systems with a capacity of nearly 1,000 MW. This is a new record, according to Tecsol SA. Flanders led the way with more than 800 MW of installed capacity, followed by Wallonia with about 140 MW and Brussels with 50 MW. Small systems of up to ten kilowatts account for 60 to 65 percent of the newly installed capacity in Belgium. The cumulatively installed capacity is about 5 GW.
The more than five terawatt hours of solar power produced last year correspond to 30 percent of the consumption of Belgian households or slightly more than six percent of Belgium’s total electricity consumption. By 2030, the country aims to install at least 1.5 GW of new solar power per year, said Tecsol.
