Pakistan rejects speculation on its nuclear safety

Pakistan on Monday rejected the speculations about the safety and security of the country's nuclear program and said Pakistan's strategic assets were completely safe and secure.

Pakistan's strategic assets were under strong multi-layered decision-making, organisational, administrative and command and control structure, and Pakistan also had in place exports control that conformed to the most stringent international standards, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said at the weekly news briefing here.

Aslam made the remarks when reacting to a book published in London titled "biggest threat to world peace". She said the book contained baseless and malicious allegations.

Aslam said Pakistan had acquired nuclear deterrence in the interest of peace, security and stability of the region and its strategic assets were completely safe and secure.

Aslam firmly rejected the allegations and said contents of the book were rehash of repeated assertions prompted by biased motives. She said certain people still found it difficult to accept that Pakistan had acquired nuclear deterrence.

The outlandish behavior of such elements only brought into sharp focus their prejudice against Pakistan, Aslam said, adding that the authors of the book in their hostility had gone beyond the issue of proliferation to malign Pakistan and its leadership.

Such people needed to know that Pakistan was a progressive, moderate and vibrant society with expanding economy and it was the anchor of stability in the region, said Aslam.

With regard to the threat of terrorism, Aslam said, the authors should know that in addressing this contemporary challenge Pakistan was playing an active role and it had the same concerns and objectives as the rest of the world.

She said Pakistan's principal concern was to keep its defense strong and unassailable, and added that Pakistan would take all steps required to maintain credible deterrence and strong defense capability, without getting into arms race.
