LG Electronics Says It May Acquire Overseas Solar Cell Maker

LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's second-largest electronics maker, said it may acquire an overseas solar cell maker to expand into the solar energy.

The company is considering options including an acquisition or investment in a solar-cell maker, Judy Pae, a spokeswoman for Seoul-based LG said by telephone today.

LG Electronics plans to buy a stake in Conergy AG's plant in Frankfurt an der Oder that makes solar panels, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported today, citing unidentified people. LG's Pae declined to comment on the report.

Conergy is considering selling its factory that builds solar panels and focus on installing and servicing modules, Die Welt reported last month, citing Chief Executive Officer Dieter Ammer.
