Texas Solar Power earns $180,000 in stimulus funds

Texas Solar Power Co. received two, stimulus-funded contracts worth

$180,000 to install photovoltaic solar systems in national wildlife

refuges.

The contract awarded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be used

for projects in the Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge south of

Amarillo and the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge.

The agreement is part of four sourced from U.S. Recovery and

Reinvestment Act meant to generate electricity for the buildings on

refuges, according to the Wildlife Service.

In August, Texas Solar completed “SunFlowers — An Electric Garden,”

the city’s largest public art project. The electric garden comprises

15 sunflower sculptures that collect solar energy during the day and

illuminate at night. They extend for nearly 540 feet and tower 18 to 24

feet above a Mueller development’s hike and bike trail. They produce

more than 18,000 kilowatt hours of power each year.
