Romania: Investors in Renewable Energy Generation to Get 200 Mln Euros By 2013

The Romanian government approved on Wednesday a resolution under which companies operating in the energy sector can receive by 2013 a combined 200 million euros ( about 313 million U.S. dollars) in co-financing for energy generation from renewable resources, Prime Minister Calin Popescu- Tariceanu said at the end of the government meeting.

According to him, the money will flow into wind power plants, biomass fired hydropower plants or other technologies using renewable resources.

"We address enterprises — be they large, small or medium-sized – – that invest in any of Romania's eight development regions. The beneficiaries of this state grant scheme are all projects implying costs higher than 50 million euros," said Tariceanu.

According to the prime minister, the total amount earmarked until 2013 is 200 million euro, of which 170 million euros from structural funds.

"We planned 200 million euros by 2013, an amount that will be broken up on a yearly basis. Of this amount, 170 million euros are non-reimbursable European funds from the European Regional Development Fund," said the head of the government.

Romania needs to invest 2.7 billion euros in the generation of renewable energy by 2015 if the country is to comply with a European Union energy strategy, according to the governmental sources. (1 U.S. dollar = 0.6390 euros)
