Overheated investment in China`s wind power equipment manufacturing industry

“With the rapid development of China’s wind power industry, there is an overheated investment in the wind power equipment manufacturing industry. Although the wind power development has a great potential in China, investors should raise their market risk awareness,” said Shi Lishan, Vice Director of the New Energy Department of the National Energy Administration

Data released by China Wind Energy Association shows that China currently has more than 70 wind turbine generating unit manufacturers, over 50 fan blade manufacturers, and nearly 100 wind turbine tower manufactures. In terms of production capacity, it has far exceeded the market capacity.

Taking wind turbines as an example, it’s estimated China will newly add 8 million KW of wind turbines in 2009. Of more than 70 wind turbine generating unit manufacturers, the production capacity of four manufactures including Goldwind Science and Technology Co., Ltd, Huarui Wind Power Science and Technology Co., Ltd, Dongfang Steam Turbine Works and Shanghai Steam Turbine Plant alone has reached 12 million KW; in addition, international wind turbine manufacturer giants rushed to China after the international financial crisis to make the market competition unprecedentedly fierce

It is understood that, some manufactures have rationally dropped out in the face of overheated investment and surplus production capacity in the wind power equipment manufacturing industry. But some small-scale wind power equipment manufacturers with weak technologies will gradually be eliminated, and those with core technologies and strong R&D capability will get the upper hand.
