Montreal's Kruger enters solar energy market

Montreal-based Kruger Inc., the paper, packaging and tissue products group, is expanding in the renewable energy sector.

Its Kruger Energy Inc. has formed a joint venture with a unit of Toronto's Helios Energy Inc. to develop large-scale commercial and industrial rooftop solar energy systems in Canada and the United States.

"The partnership will focus on developing and transferring ownership of the systems to Kruger Energy, which will operate them on long-term lease with building owners," Kruger said in a statement. "Via the partnership, Kruger Energy enters the solar energy market with a view to owning and operating a portfolio of solar facilities."

With more than 420MW of installed hydro, wind and biomass energy capacity, Kruger Energy has "the track record and the financial depth to expand successfully into the solar market, leveraging the technical and development expertise Helios has built up since 2006," said Jean Roy, vice-president and general manager.

Canadian-owned Helios has 75MW of solar energy projects at various stages of development.
