MidAmerican breezes to top in wind energy

Des Moines-based MidAmerican Energy Co. ranks No. 1 among rate-regulated utility companies in ownership of wind farms.

MidAmerican is No. 3 among all companies, behind two independent power producers that generate electricity and sell it to regulated utilities.

MidAmerican wind-turbine farms in Iowa are home to about 325 turbines that produce about 460 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 144,000 homes, the company says.

An additional 123 megawatts of capacity are scheduled for completion this year. The company also gets electricity on contract from another 113 turbines.

Iowa ranks No. 3 behind Texas and California in installed wind-energy capacity.
