Kazakhstan Eyes Higher Clean Energy Production By 2014

Bernama quoted the country's Renewable Energy Sources office said Kazakhstan plans to increase its clean energy production by 2014.

According to the ministry, the amount of generated electricity from renewable sources is expected to reach 1 billion kWh per year with over 1% of total energy consumption by the end of 2014.

TREND news agency reported that Electricity generation by renewable energy sources facilities in Kazakhstan in 2011 amounted to 420 million kWh an increase of 17 million kWh or four percent more compared to 2010.

The ministry said the potential of renewable energy sources in Kazakhstan is about 1 trillion kWh per year, adding that Kazakhstan wind energy potential is estimated at 920 billion kWh of electricity per year and hydropower potential at eight billion kWh.

The country also has resources for developing solar energy with the potential of producing between 2,500 to 3,000 hours of sunshine annually in the southern parts of the country. In addtion, Kazakhstan has the potential to use geothermal and anthropogenic sources of primary energy sources such as biomass, biogas and other fuels from organic waste.

The share of renewable energy sources in electricity production in Kazakhstan currently stands at 0.5%. The impetus for the development of renewable energy came following the adoption of a law on supporting the use of renewable sources of energy which came into being in 2009.
