Japan Atomic Power to Shut Tsuruga Reactor to Repair Pump Fault

Japan Atomic Power Co. said it will shut its No. 1 Tsuruga nuclear reactor today after discovering a fault at a water-circulating pump.

The company will close the reactor for an unspecified period to inspect the pump, and fix it if required, Japan Atomic Power said in a statement in Tokyo.

The 357-megawatt reactor started low-capacity operations on Sept. 1 as part of routine maintenance that was due to end by late this month. The unplanned pump inspection will force Japan Atomic Power to extend the maintenance period, it said in the statement.

The reactor is located at Tsuruga, a city in Fukui prefecture.
