Iowa may enact small-scale solar power plan

Lawmakers in the state of Iowa recently unveiled a plan that would pay home- and small business owners to install small solar and wind power systems.

Democrats in Iowa's state legislature introduced a $10 million plan to give consumers and business owners tax rebates for using clean alternative energy solutions for their private buildings, according to a report from the Associated Press. Homeowners could get rebates of up to $3,000, while those for small business owners would be for as much as $15,000.

The bill, introduced by leading Democrats in the state, is expected to provide about $4 million to homeowners, enough to fund roughly 1,300 projects across the state. The roughly $6 million remaining could pay for the equivalent of 400 solar arrays for businesses. In addition, these companies would still be eligible for the 30 percent tax credit granted by the federal government for these projects.

In addition to the money consumers save from government tax credits and other initiatives, solar projects often defray their own costs by providing relief from high energy bills for homeowners and businesses alike.
