EDF Reports Nuclear Incident at Halted Cattenom Power Plant

Electricite de France SA, Europe's biggest power producer, reported a nuclear safety incident during a production halt at its Cattenom-1 reactor.

During refueling, two of eight fans in the reactor building were mistakenly turned off, the Paris-based utility said today in a statement on its Web site.

There was no effect on plant safety and the fans were turned back on when the error was detected, Electricite de France said. The event was rated “1'' on the International Nuclear Event Scale, a system measuring the severity of reactor incidents, where “0'' is the least severe and “7'' the most serious.

Power companies are obliged to report nuclear safety events to regulators. Incidents rated “1'' on the scale are typically equipment failures, human errors and procedural faults.
