Coalition forms to fight W. Mass. biofuel plants

A coalition of environmental, fiscal responsibility, public health and social justice groups are joining together to fight proposed biofuel plants in western Massachusetts

The coalition has scheduled a news conference in Greenfield on Monday to announce a campaign to ensure that the state maintains a moratorium on biomass energy for at least three years.

Biomass plants have been proposed for Greenfield, Russell and Springfield.

The coalition says biomass pollution generated by the plants are a threat to public health and want to ensure that such plants are not built with subsidies from ratepayers or with the use of taxpayer money.

The group alleges that the construction of biomass plants violates the constitution by denying the public the right to clean air and water.
