IKCO to Design D8 Joint Car

The Eight Developing countries (D8) tasked Iran's largest automaker Iran-Khodro Company (IKCO) with designing a platform for their joint car.

In a three-day summit of D8 industry ministers in Istanbul, Turkey on October 4-6 2011, IKCO was requested to design a D8 joint car in collaboration with Turkish and Indonesian automakers.

During the summit, Turkey was tasked with establishing the D8 Society of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers within eight months.

Uniforming technical regulations and standards of D8 countries in automobile and parts manufacturing with those of the United Nation Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) as well as applying for membership in this association was another agreement of the summit. Egypt was the member that undertook this responsibility.

The members of this workgroup also reached an agreement on promoting research and development activities in such new fields as CNG technology, hybrid technology, plug-in cars, new materials and nano-technology.

Improving the quality, the level of technology and also the capacity of the chain of supply was another issue settled by the D8 vehicle working group.

Representatives of Turkish parts manufacturers, Egypt's national institute of standards, Indonesian Car Manufacturing Association and its main holding of part manufacturers took part in this two-day vehicle workgroup meeting chaired by Malaysia.
