Evergreen Solar files for bankruptcy

The solar company says it will lay off 65 workers in Europe and the US, and plans to sell off its assets including the String Ribbon solar wafer manufacturing technology.

Evergreen Solar will suspend operations at its manufacturing facility in Midland (MI), however, operations in China are expected to continue.

The solar cell manufacturer has had two turbulent years struggling with increasing competition from Asia, falling wafer prices and subsidy cuts in key European solar markets.
