Europe's Largest Onshore Wind Farm Moves Forward

Scottish and Southern Energy plc (SSE) has been granted consent to develop a 456 MW wind farm in southern Scotland.

The £600 million [US $1.2 billion] project, which will be built in two phases, is known as Clyde and is to be located between Biggar and Moffat. The wind farm will eventually have up to 152 turbines with a capacity of 3 megawatts each. Construction work is expected to begin later in this fiscal year.

First commissioning is scheduled for 2010 and completion of both phases scheduled for 2011, when it will be the continent’s largest onshore wind development.

“Projects like Clyde are essential if Scotland and the UK are to have any hope of meeting legally-binding EU targets for renewable energy. Clyde is clearly going to be a major project, with significant economic opportunities for the local community,” said Ian Marchant, CEO of SSE.
