China's Shenhua to triple wind capacity by 2015

Shenhua Group, China's top coal producer, plans to triple its installed wind power capacity from 2 gigawatts at the end of 2010 to 6 GW by the end of 2015, the head of its alternative energy unit said on Jun 7, Reuters reported.

Shenhua plans to further increase its wind power capacity to more than 10 GW by 2020, Gui Kai, general manager of Guohua Energy Investment Corp, Shenhua Group's alternative energy unit, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Shanghai.

Gui said the company was focusing on developing wind power in the coastal provinces of Hebei, Jiangsu and Shandong. Jiangsu had also invited bids for four offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 1 GW, and Gui said Guohua was considering bidding but declined to give details.

Guohua's expansion could leave it with one-third of the national offshore market, since China was likely to have 30,000 megawatts (30 GW) of offshore wind power by 2020, a researcher said on Jun 7.
