China releases 12th five year plan for renewable energy targets

China's National Energy Administration said Wednesday that the government has released targets for renewable energy under the current 12th five-year economic plan running from 2011 to 2015.

The NEA said the overall goal is for total renewable energy consumption to reach 478 million mt of coal equivalent, representing 9.5% or more of the overall energy consumption mix by end 2015.

Total installed hydropower generation capacity is targeted to reach 290 million kilowatts, while wind power will total 100 million kW. Solar power capacity will total 21 million kW.

Total biomass energy consumption will be 50 million mt of coal equivalent.

China will establish 100 new energy model cities, 200 green counties and 30 new energy demonstration projects during the period, the NEA added.

Last year, China said that it would aggressively encourage the development of emerging technologies in new energy to increase economies of scale and domestic expertise.

China has pledged to increase its non-fossil fuel energy consumption to 11.4% of the energy mix during the 12th five-year plan, compared with 9.6% during the 11th five-year plan. It also aims to reduce its energy consumption per unit of GDP by 16% and achieve a 17% cut in its carbon emissions by 2015 from 2010 levels.
