National commercial and community solar provider Pivot Energy has entered into an agreement with Safeguard Storage Properties to engineer, procure and construct solar systems on 14 of its self-storage facilities located in Illinois. The agreement will produce nearly 90% of Safeguard’s facilities’ electricity consumption in the Chicago-metro area.

“Safeguard has once again shown its leadership within the self-storage industry by choosing solar energy to help protect the environment and benefit its bottom line,” said Mat Elmore, managing director for Pivot. “Self-storage facilities are often ideal buildings to install solar systems on due to their high energy consumption and unused rooftop space. We’re thrilled to partner with Safeguard to upgrade their Illinois facilities with clean solar energy.”

The portfolio of projects totals 1.5 MW of solar energy, enough electricity to power nearly 300 residential homes. The first solar systems will be completed and operating by mid-summer 2020, with the remaining portfolio coming online in early Q4 2020.

“Safeguard has been investing in solar power since 2014 and has completed 26 solar power system installations and is delighted to be partnering with Pivot Energy to add an additional 14 new solar power systems”, said Mark B Rinder, executive VP, CEO and CFO of Safeguard.

Since 2017, Pivot has provided for the self-storage industry, with more than 100 solar projects completed or currently in construction for multiple national self-storage customers. To date, Pivot has completed or is currently constructing more than 30 MW of community and commercial solar capacity in Illinois.
