Mainstream Renewable Power seeks approval for offshore wind

Mainstream Renewable Power has submitted a consent application to Marine Scotland Licensing Operations Team for the proposed £1.4bn Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm in Scottish territorial waters.

The wind farm will occupy an area of about 105km² on a site that lies 15km off the Fife coast, in depths of 45m to 55m.

The application is now open to consultation until 10 September and proposes the development of 64 to 125 wind turbines.

Mainstream Renewable Power offshore business chief executive Andy Kinsella said that the application was a major milestone in the delivery of this offshore wind farm.

The wind project would generate 450MW electricity, enough to power 325,000 homes when fully operational.

"With over 7,500MW of offshore wind farms in development in the UK and Germany, this demonstrates Mainstream's ability in selecting the best sites, developing to a high standard and delivering to challenging milestones," Kinsella said.

After securing grid connection in 2010 and lease agreement with The Crown Estate in 2011, the company aims to reach financial close in 2013 and be fully operational by the end of 2016.
