China Wind Power in 700MW renewables push with nuclear giant CNNC

Renewables developer China Wind Power (CWP) has entered into a co-operation agreement with CNNC Rich Energy, a subsidiary of Chinese nuclear giant CNNC. Hong Kong-listed CWP told investors that the companies intend to co-invest in and construct 500MW of wind power and 200MW of solar power projects by 2015. The agreement seems to show a push by CNNC towards renewable energy technologies, although the company is still heavily invested in nuclear power due to the huge demand for energy in China. The country’s reliance on fossil fuels has caused poisonous smog and haze in major cities, but nuclear power offers a large energy output without the carbon footprint. According to BJReview, Sun Qin, President of China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC), recently noted that the country’s pollution problems could be helped by nuclear – which emits no carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, or nitrogen dioxide. ‘If China only uses nuclear power, the frequency of hazy days will definitely be reduced,’ Qin said. CNNC expects to have ten nuclear reactors come online between now and the end of 2015, with a combined generation capacity of 10.28GW.
