5.4-kWh Fortress Power battery receives UL 9540 listing

Fortress Power announced that its eFlex 5.4-kWh lithium battery has completed UL 9540A thermal runaway tests. The battery has also been listed to UL 9540.

Fortress Power said that its batteries did not catch fire when submitted to thermal runaway tests. The Fortress Power eFlex 5.4 unit only generated smoke after four hours of heating with the cell temperate reaching over 250°F (120°C). The battery pack stabilized and the temperature dropped back to 95°F (35°C) in five hours. During the whole 14 hours of testing, Fortress said there was no visible flame/fire observed.

The eFlex battery uses an extruded aluminum body with a prismatic lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery module design.

“Safety and reliability are our No 1. priorities in the residential energy storage system. We select best-in-class lithium iron phosphate battery cells and power electronic components in all our battery systems. Our digital processed based battery management system (BMS) has an optimized control algorithm to protect the battery cell and prolong its lifespan,” said Eric Wang, CTO of Fortress Power.
