Mandatory greenhouse gas data reporting starts

Mandatory reporting of greenhouse gas emissions to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began August 22 with the launch of a tool to enable 7,000 industrial emitters and suppliers submit data electronically.

Under EPA's GHG Reporting Program, facilities including power plants must submit GHG data to EPA annually. The first round of data must be submitted by Sept. 30, 2011. EPA plans to publish non-confidential information by the end of 2011.

Data collected with the system, called the electronic greenhouse gas reporting tool (e-GGRT), will provide information about the largest stationary sources of greenhouse gas emissions. EPA said industries and businesses can use the data to help find ways to cut carbon emissions, increase efficiency and save money.
