Offshore wind transmission link in Europe supplied by ABB

ABB (NYSE: ABB) won a $1 billion order from the Dutch-German transmission grid operator TenneT to supply a power link connecting offshore North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid.

ABB will design, engineer, supply and install the offshore platform, the offshore and onshore converter stations and the land and sea cable systems.

The company's high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Light transmission technology will be designed to transport power from the 400 MW Gode Wind II and other wind farms off the German coast to an offshore HVDC converter station, which will transmit the electricity to the onshore HVDC station on to mainland Germany.

The HVDC system has a rating of more than 900 MW. The network is scheduled to be operational in 2015.
