Indiana airport seeks developer for large solar farm

The largest airport in Indiana is now interested in constructing a large-scale solar energy system, and is seeking estimates from companies that would build the farm.

Officials at the Indianapolis International Airport recently announced that it wants to build a 10 megawatt solar power system, large enough to power about 6,000 homes, and is currently seeking a developer to build the farm on 30 acres of land near the end of one of its runways, according to a report from the Indianapolis Star. The airport would then lease the property and sell the power generated to Indianapolis Power and Light.

This move comes after airports in Denver, Colorado, and Fresno, California, have also made similar solar power systems on property that would otherwise not be useful for development, the report said. Currently, though, it is unknown just how much revenue the solar farm could generate for the airport.

Many businesses are turning to solar power they can then sell to local energy concerns to drive revenues, as these projects often reduce strain on electric grids.
