Vestas wins 86MW Brazil order

The contract is for 21 V100 1.8MW and 16 V90 3MW turbines and includes a five-year service agreement. The aim is for the turbines to be installed by end-2011.

Vestas was unable to reveal the customer.

In September, Argentinian wind energy company Pescarmona Metallurgical Industries (IMPSA) won a contract to provide wind turbines with a capacity of 450MW to the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia.

The contract was awarded through Brazil's National Electric Energy Agency.

Recently, Brazil's minister for mines and energy, Marcio Zimmermann, said his country has already built or approved 5,300MW of wind facilities, which was originally a target for 2030.

At the end of August, 70 Brazilian wind projects with a total capacity of 2.05GW were contracted through an alternative energy auction and an auction for reserve energy – extra power to be sold as needed to guarantee energy security – at the end of August.

However, concerns remain about whether the Brazilian projects will be built at cut-throat prices.

Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the Global Wind Energy Council, said the prices for large volumes of wind energy were among the lowest worldwide from auctions.
