West Cumbrian wind farm plans rejected

Plans to build six wind turbines at Hill Farm, near Cockermouth, have been rejected.

Renewable Energy Systems UK applied to Allerdale council to build the turbines on land north east of Tallentire and south of Gilcrux.

At a meeting of the authority’s development panel, residents criticised the plans citing positioning and the visual impact of the 100m turbines.

Craig Baker, who has lived in Gilcrux for 20 years, said: “We are sick and tired of seeing these structures being built.

“The whole area is compromised and I am very concerned.”

Ian McCambridge said: “The turbines proposed would be dominant and intrusive.

“On-shore turbines are controversial and would deter tourists from visiting.”

Councillor Bill Jefferson described the application as “frivolous”.

He added: “We should reject this and any such like it because West Cumbria is full up.”

Coun Binky Armstrong added: “We are at saturation point now.”

But Coun Martin Wood was in favour of the turbines and said that the area would benefit from the turbines, which would create enough energy for 6,700 homes.

The application was rejected with an eight to two majority.
