Wind energy installations top 2009 levels

The first half of 2010 has seen a total of 118 new offshore wind turbines fully connected to the grid.

Despite the financial crisis, recent statistics from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) show that the installed turbines already have a capacity of 333 MW.

This suggests a strong rate of growth, considering that the total capacity for last year's installations came to 577 MW.

Justin Wilkies, director of policy at EWEA, commented: "The number of offshore wind turbines connected to the grid in the first half of this year is well over half the total amount installed all last year and I am confident we are heading for a record year."

He added: "Europe is a world leader in offshore wind energy, and continuing growth – and the availability of finance – is essential for European jobs and competitiveness as well as for reducing carbon dioxide emissions

The comments come as ENDS Europe revealed that wind power will dwarf other sources of renewable energy sources in Europe by 2020.
