300 protest Scotland wind project

EDINBURGH, Scotland, June 12 — Organizers say more than 300 people turned out Saturday to protest a planned wind farm in the Scottish Borders region.

Say No To Fallago held the protest in the Lammermuir Hills, a rural area the group says will be spoiled by the 48 turbines proposed by North British Windpower.

"If it is approved, the Scottish government will be declaring open war on Scotland's countryside — no landscape will be safe from industrialization by these high rise wind machines," Fallago spokesman Mark Rowley told The Daily Telegraph.

North British Windpower says the area is sparsely populated and also has access to a major transmission line nearby.

A public inquiry will be held prior to a formal decision on a permit for the project.
