Wind Turbines Could Become a Reality for the Outer Banks

Taking advantage of the wind along the North Carolina coast is a key part of a plan to create alternative energy.
The Outer Banks could become home to large wind turbines.
A recent study concludes that an area near Buxton would be optimal for the state’s first off-shore wind farm.
The state hosted a public forum to pitch the idea and get feedback from the people who live there.
“This is among the best wind resources along the eastern seaboard,“ said UNC researcher Dr. Harvey Siem.
Wind turbines aren’t new to the Outer Banks.
The Outer Banks brewing station and the coquina beach bath house already use wind power.
“I believe North Carolina has the capacity to position herself to be a leader in green energy,“ said Governor Bev Perdue.
The turbines being considered would be up to 500 feet tall with some of them visible from the shore.
