Govt releases paper on renewable energy target

The Federal Government has released a discussion paper that outlines two ways it could phase in its renewable energy target by 2020.

The Commonwealth wants renewable sources to provide 20 per cent of the country's energy by that deadline.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong says she hopes stakeholders will offer feedback on the two options.

"Essentially it looks at different ways that you can phase in the 2020 target," she said.

"That's essentially the difference between option one and option two, how quickly you phase in the introduction of the increase in target.

"So we're currently at 9,500 gigawatt hours and the target will take us legislatively up to I think it's 45,000."
