PepsiCo will deploy CNG-powered vehicles by year's end

PepsiCo said Thursday its subsidiary, Frito-Lay, will deploy 67 compressed natural gas-powered tractor-trailers by the end of the year.

The Purchase, New York-based company said the trucks will be used at Frito-Lay distribution centers at Rancho Cucamonga, California; Irving, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Beloit, Wisconsin; Frankfort, Indiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Casa Grande, Arizona.

The CNG vehicles, which will be bought from Freightliner, will eliminate the need for more than 900,000 gallons of diesel fuel/year and emit 23% less greenhouse gas than diesel fuel, PepsiCo said in a statement.

Depending on the fuel tank size, these CNG powered trucks will be able to travel 300 to 740 miles/fillup, the company said.
