China to provide $1.56 bln for 2 Pakistan nuclear power plants

China will provide $1.56 billion for the construction of two 320-megawatt nuclear power plants in Pakistan, official sources said on May 22.


The two plants will be built at Chashma in southern Punjab, where a 320-megawatt Chinese-aided nuclear power plant is in operation and a second plant is nearing completion with Chinese assistance.


China will finance 82 percent of the total cost of building the two nuclear plants, estimated at $1.9 billion, the sources said.


Chashma, about 200 kilometers southwest of Islamabad, has been designated as the hub of Pakistani nuclear facilities, with at least eight nuclear power plants set to be built there.
