Gansu to build a 20GW wind power base

China will build a huge wind power base in its northwest province of Gansu, sources said on Thursday.

There will be a 10 gigawatts wind power base constructed in Gansu, the most promising area for clean energy in China, said Feng Jianshen, a vice governor of Gansu province.

The province is planning to expand its wind power capacity to 20 gigawatts by the year of 2020, becoming the biggest power base in China. The province will invite investment from HongKong in the second half of this year, Feng added.

After completion of the project, the wind power capacity is supposed to equal to the Three Gorges’ hydropower capacity, which is currently about 18.2 gigawatts and plans to hit 22.4 gigawatts in future.

Moreover, the province also stepped up their activities in developing solar power and other clean energy.

The province’s solar power installed capacity is designed to reach 1.3 gigawatts by 2015 and hit 3.3 gigawatts in 2020, said Feng.
