Oklahoma cell buyers are called on to support green energy

If you want to support wind power development in Oklahoma, here’s your chance.

A Colorado-based company, Renewable Choice Energy, is making available renewable energy credits to consumers who are buying mobile phones.

The credits, broken up into 500 kilowatt hour increments, are available for sale at $10 at Best Buy stores across the country, Renewable Choice officials said.

The program is called "Green Your Phone.”

A new offer

Best Buy is the first major retailer to debut the product, Renewable Choice Energy added.

"Green Your Phone provides our customers with a tangible way to support renewable energy,” said Scott Moore, vice president of marketing for Best Buy Mobile.

Renewable Choice is providing 10,000 of the credits to Best Buy to launch the program and raise awareness of the environmental benefits of renewable power, Renewable Choice Energy officials said.

"For the past several years, businesses have increasingly embraced the renewable energy credits to help grow our country’s clean power infrastructure,” said Quayle Hodek, founder and chief executive of Renewable Choice Energy. "Green Your Phone is a way for forward-thinking consumers to join this effort and help drive the growth of wind power, helping to reduce our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels.”

Some of the credits being sold came from the FPL Energy Sooner Wind development near Woodward. The Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority, which buys power from the project along with Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co., sold some of its credits to Renewable Choice Energy.

Dave Osburn, the authority’s director of engineering and operations, said its member cities have first choice on marketing the credits, adding that Edmond particularly does so. While the credits were not a critical issue in the authority’s decision to contract for power with Sooner Wind, Osburn said they often are.

"To any developer doing a wind farm in today’s market, renewable energy credits are critical to the revenue stream in taking a project over the top. If we do another one, it certainly will be a critical factor,” he said.
