Enel Plans Italy's First Offshore Wind Farm

In cooperation with Moncada Costruzioni, Enel plans to develop the project in the Gulf of Gela approximately 5 kilometers from the Sicilian coast between the towns of Licata, Butera and Gela. The estimated cost of installing the 115 turbines will be around €500 million [US $792.48 million]. The turbines will range from 3-5 megawatts (MW) in capacity.

The project, developed through a joint venture between Enel (57%) and Moncada Costruzioni (43%), will have a total installed capacity of between 345 and 575 MW. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate 1150 gigwatt-hours annually.

“This innovative project will double Enel’s installed capacity in the wind sector in Italy. It is an example of virtuous co-operation among companies, local institutions and environmental associations,” said Fulvio Conti, CEO of Enel.
