Japan Wind begins to trade electricity Thurs-Nikkei

Japan Wind Development Co (2766.T: Quote, Profile, Research), the country's only listed wind power developer, will start using Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) to sell electricity to other power suppliers on Thursday, the Nikkei business daily said.

Given the nature of unstable electricity supply from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, it is the first time an alternative energy supplier has used the exchange, the paper said.

The company was not immediately available for comment.

Previously, Japan's third-biggest wind power supplier sold electricity directly to regional electric power companies.

A JEPX official said the company has already acquired a trading membership at JEPX, Japan's sole exchange for spot and forward electricity.

Japan Wind installed an NAS (sodium-sulfur) battery electricity storage system at one of its wind farms, allowing for stable output and helping it sell power generated by its turbines to other power suppliers. (Reporting by Risa Maeda)
