China should give more support to wind power development

China Wind Power Development Report 2007 was recently jointly released by China Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), Greenpeace and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) at the Wind Power Shanghai 2007 held last Thursday in Shanghai.

China's installed wind power generation capacity could reach 50 million kw by the yearend of 2020 based on current government policies, accounting for 4 percent of the national total installed power generation capacity at that time. However, the report says, with a slightly more supportive policy, the country's installed wind power capacity could reach 80 million kw by yearend 2020, accounting for 7 percent of the national total, versus China's publicized wind power development target of 30 million kw by 2020.

By the end of 2007, China will have a total wind power installed capacity of 5 million kw, fulfilling its target for 2010 three years earlier, said Li Junfeng, general secretary of CREIA. "With effective supportive policies, China could well make it into the top three for wind power in the world by 2020," Li added.
