Iran, North Korea Say They Will Strengthen Their Economic Ties

Iran and North Korea agreed to strengthen their economic cooperation, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said, citing Iran's Ministry of Commerce.

The countries signed an agreement yesterday on boosting ties in construction and technology, as well as other economic areas, the news agency said.

North Korea has been in negotiations with the U.S., China, South Korea, Japan and Russia to dismantle its nuclear weapons program in return for energy and economic aid.

The United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on North Korea after it tested a nuclear weapon on Oct. 9.

Iran is under UN sanctions for refusing to end the production of enriched uranium, which can be used to fuel a reactor or form the core of a bomb. Iran says its program is part of a plan to produce nuclear energy, while the U.S. accuses Iran of trying to develop atomic weapons.
